LED INDUSTRIES Light Emitting Diodes (LED)
will offer the most efficient approach to transform electrical energy into light and enables progress in lighting, communications, manufacturing healthcare to name just a few. Inorganic LEDs
based on compound semiconductor materials went through a steep improvement curve over the last two decades covering now the entire visible spectrum. LEDs started to replace conventional light sources in many applications stretching from automotive interior and exterior lighting, backlighting of LCD displays all the way to the general illumination space. The LED technology is enabling tremendous energy savings, new functionalities and a new way how we use and perceive light. The rapid transition to LEDs is driving the growth of the lighting market offering fascinating opportunities along the value chain from LED materials, equipment and components to LED systems. The “digital” LED light fuels the adoption of intelligent lighting control systems to fully exploit the visual and biological effects of light. The transition to LED based lighting leads to a shift from replacement- to first-time-installation business, changes the value chain and the completive landscape significantly. Organic LEDs (OLED)
are the comparatively younger technology platform where electroluminescent light is generated from large areas of thin organic materials. Currently, the main commercial use of OLEDs is in display applications such as smartphones. In the future, direct-emitting OLED-TVs will compete with backlit LCDs and the use of OLEDs for general illumination will become commercially viable. OLEDs being processed on flexible substrates open up a new horizon with respect to lower cost manufacturing by roll-to-roll printing. The complete freedom in form factor, design and appearance of flexible displays and lighting systems will pave the way to new applications and markets. Heavy investments in R&D and manufacturing capacity especially in Asia underline the strong confidence that OLEDs will be the next wave in solid state lighting catching up with LEDs in performance and cost.
